5th of July Reviews
Chicago Reader - Recommended
"...Director Michael Weber has done a great job of building on Wilson's strengths, packing this production with fine actors who know how to plumb the script's depths. Danny Bernardo and Rebekah Ward-Hays are particularly good at this, playing a main character's patient, long-suffering lover and a druggy demi-celebrity who learns to stand up for herself."
Windy City Times - Somewhat Recommended
"...Under director Michael Weber, Oak Park Festival has mounted an earnest and lively production of Fifth of July, with a fine cast featuring Stef Tovar ( Ken ) , Danny Bernardo ( Jed ) , Kate Kisner ( Aunt Sally ) and Rebekah Ward-Hays ( Gwen ) among an ensemble of equals. Ricky Lurie's late-1970's costumes—especially for John and Gwen—also add visual fun. However, the production doesn't find all the textures of the work, which subtly shifts tone or color almost from moment to moment. Conversations and events—when events occur—all are given equal weight. As a result, Aunt Sally's unexpected resolve and bidding war against John doesn't have the impact it needs as the Talleys close ranks against an outside threat."

"...Director Michael Weber uses Austin Gardens’ natural atmosphere to emphasize Wilson’s characters’ love of the land and wields a subtle, naturalistic hand with his phenomenal cast. Led by the Stef Tovar, who admirably transforms himself into the conflicted Tally, the seasoned performers deliver with heart-filled intensity. While somewhat inhibited by the natural surroundings (low flying airplanes, passing cars), they unite the viewers with their focused charm and causality."

"...the Oak Park Theatre Festival is a good time, and is especially suited to summer in Chicago. One thing I learned from the locals, though, is that you should bring plenty of wine, food, and bug spray. Enjoying theatre al fresco, even if it’s not of the highest caliber, is still its own fun experience."
