Rarely produced sci-fi songfest Return to the Forbidden Planet was originally billed as "Shakespeare's forgotten rock-n-roll musical." The script by Bob Carlton is loosely based on the 1956 classic "B" movie Forbidden Planet which, in turn, is loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Tempest. The play features a kitschy setting and a soundtrack full of '50s and '60s rock 'n' roll hits from the Animals, the Byrds, the Beach Boys and more. The campy juke-box musical redux won the Olivier Award for Best Musical when it first opened on London's West End in 1989 and now it makes its Chicago-area premiere at the Jedlicka Performing Arts Center in Cicero.
