With the Confucian command to honor and obey elders in their upbringing, it is often culturally taboo for Asians to divulge public emotion and opinion about their mothers. As artists, the mostly Asian American cast members and writers of "My Asian Mom" are compelled to express their truths about their families and mothers.

"...Disapproval is a major theme, in fact—but most of the pieces strike a balance between the poignant and the playful. "I'm going to disappoint my mother again," says a daughter portrayed by Mia Park as she tries to prepare the title food in "Eight Turkey Sandwiches." Yet she loves the life she's created for herself and ends up telling her (absent) Asian mother: "I can't sacrifice myself for you the way you and Grandma did for me." What she can do, though, is stand on her head. And for the last minute of "Eight Turkey Sandwiches," she does."

"...As a finale, “Tiger Mom”—a mini musical that taps into the anxiety purportedly sweeping upper-middle-class Caucasian households thanks to the parenting book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother—is a strange choice. It’s clever and contains a satisfying surprise, but closing on white performers razzing an Asian mom’s advice (however controversial) blurs the dignity of the seven other testimonies."
