Set backstage at the fictitious Kuzlov Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, “The Quick Change Room” is set against the crumbling of the Soviet Union. Essentially, the term “quick change room” is used as a comedic metaphor for the too rapid transformation of Russia from communism to free-market capitalism. The plot focuses on an effort to cope with capitalism, the Kuzlov Theatre must be more commercial. So a scheme emerges to alter Chekhov’s “The Three Sisters” to include “music, some songs and maybe even some dances.” Chekhov’s masterpiece becomes, for marketing purposes, an American style musical featuring only two sisters and titled “O My Sister!”
