"...An intriguing and fascinating work by David Alex, "Onto Infinity" is full of exciting promise. But the play - presented by Azusa Productions at Eclipse Theatre at Victory Gardens Greenhouse Theater in Chicago - could use some tweaking to reach its full potential."

"...A character with an explanation for everything coming face-to-face with the unexplainable (love, death) is usually compelling on stage, but here we remain distanced from the protagonist because Alex rarely allows him any humanizing doubts or pangs. Instead, he just keeps offering cheeky, math-related comebacks to life's major quandaries. It doesn't help matters that Luke Wager is relentlessly chipper as the hero or that leading lady Amy Anderson seems on the verge of dozing off. By the time the inexorable finally wins, we've long since run out of patience."

"...If Onto Infinity were a different kind of play, such a liaison would be the premise for incisive polemics, bittersweet hankie-wringing or tragic despair. But while playwright David Alex's young man/older woman Romance—with a capital “R”—is commendable for its originality, the dynamic invoked by this unconventional attraction remains enigmatic, not only to their peers, but to us as well."

"...Alex fills his work with wise observations about the nature of passion and eternal love. His frequent theme that the lovers of scientists and artists become mere mistresses to the muse is also well documented and thoughtfully rendered. Unfortunately, most of Alex’s dialogue is so full of heady observations that his characters become mere figureheads for his theories."

"...Director Brandon Hayes uses the Upstairs Studio Theater at The Victory Gardens Greenhouse well- Don hardly ever leaves the stage and when other scenes are taking place, he is writing on a Lucite "blackboard", working on his theory, but without detracting from the action. There is a lot of chemistry between Mr. Wager and Ms Anderson in their roles which makes the love story far more realistic."

"...Despite noble intentions, what we get is warmed-over Beautiful Mind production values, stiff crosscutting, lots of almost-comprehensible mathaphors, a one-note übernerd performance from Wager (as Don) and his chaste, chemistryless coupling with Anderson (as Deborah). Not that either is really to blame; as written, their infatuation is a purely algebraic idea, another way this heady show echoes the deep-thought conundrums at its heart. Infinity can bridge the gap between art and science in the abstract, but less so in reality."

"...This is a smart drama filled with passion, hope and a sense of the infinite possibilities of life. David Alex has a refreshingly quirky voice and Brandon Hayes has directed a tight, evocative show that allows the subtle nuances to emerge effectively. “Onto Infinity” is a fine new work that will satisfy your summer doldrums nicely. You’ll enjoy this look at the possibilities of infinity."
