Street Car Named Desire

It's one of the most famous cries that have echoed in theaters for decades. And now, Arlington Heights' Metropolis Performing Arts Centre is sponsoring a "Stella!!!" yelling contest to kick off the run of its new production of Tennessee Williams' famous play A Streetcar Named Desire.

Metropolis is inviting guys - and gals - 21 and over to throw on their coolest muscle tee and jeans, slick back their hair, stand below the beautiful Stella and scream her name for the whole world to hear - like your life depends on it - just like Marlon Brando!

Metropolis' "Stella!!!" competition is Wednesday, March 21 at Peggy Kinnane's Irish Restaurant and Pub, 8 N. Vail St. in downtown Arlington
Heights.  Registration begins at 6:30 pm. Preliminaries start at 7 pm. Five finalists will compete for the title, starting at 8 pm.

The best yell wins two round-trip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental U.S., a six-month supply of Stella Artois beer, dinner for four at Peggy Kinnane's, and four tickets to see A Streetcar Named Desire at Metropolis.  Participants will be judged on quality and emotion of yell, appearance and overall presentation.  Check out MetropolisArts.com for more contest details, including ideas for Stanley's brutish look and style.

Metropolis' "Stella!!!" contest is meant to create some noise about the theater's new production of Tennessee Williams' 1948 Pulitzer Prize winning drama, which is getting a new life March 22-April 29 at Metropolis.  Lose yourself in the torrid life of Blanche DuBois, former school teacher and socialite, as she's forced to move in with her pregnant sister Stella and brutish husband Stanley.  But the fragile teacher quickly gets a gritty life lesson in the seamy, steamy underbelly of 1940's New Orleans.

Raw, passionate and intense, Metropolis' new staging of A Streetcar Named Desire is not to be missed.  Previews are Thursday, March 22 at 7:30 pm; Friday, March 23 at 8 pm; and Saturday, March 24 at 3 and 7 pm. Performances run through April 29:  Thursday at 7:30 pm, Friday at 8 pm, Saturday at 7 pm, and Sunday at 3 pm. (Exception:  Show time Sunday, April 15 is 2 pm.  There is no show Thursday, April 19.)  Performances are $29-$38.
