Cirque du Soleil - Luzia Reviews
Chicago Tribune- Highly Recommended
"...The inspiration has set down roots, which is important at a time of big change and expansion for Cirque. I've seen pretty much all they've ever done, and "Luzia" is a special show (you don't need to shell out for the costliest seat, either). If you have a young person at home with Mexican heritage, and whom you want to help better connect with what their beautiful country means to the world and has given us all, it is hard to imagine a better opportunity for such a homecoming as "Luzia." It's a Cirque show with uncommon narrative sophistication: a creation rooted in place that allows you to print many aspects of yourself on its stories."

"...Just when you thought Cirque du Soleil might have explored every possible fantasy world and extreme circus sport in the known universe, along comes "Luzia: A Waking Dream of Mexico," a show of such natural beauty, mythic imagination, zany comedy, super-human skill and technological innovation that you leave its Big Top, perched beside the United Center, thinking Hamlet was absolutely right when he exclaimed, "What a piece of work is a man" (although he should have added "woman" to that sentence)."

"...These are but a few words to describe Cirque du Soleil's latest touring show, "Luzia: A Waking Dream of Mexico," under a white and gold big-top tent in parking lot K outside Chicago's United Center. But mere words can't accurately do it justice. This surreal journey needs to be experienced in person, as do all Cirque shows, of which this is the 38th."

"...I leave Cirque du Soleil floating in a cloud of unknowing, bemused, silenced by a surfeit of images and feelings, with so many assorted pieces of the show floating around my head-costumes and performers and bits of music and overwhelming moments of aesthetic ecstasy-that when I try to put it all together and articulate what it all means . . . I just can't."

"...The Cirque du Soleil just made a run for the border—and not the Canadian one. Ignoring the United States (a favorite activity of many nowadays), the Montreal-based human circus lavishes its unstoppable imagination on our neighbor to the south. Luzia, the latest (ad)venture under the redesigned white-and-gold Grand Chapiteau (its tent planted in the parking lot of Chicago’s United Center), is a 130-minute extravaganza billed as “a waking dream of Mexico.”"

"...LUZIA is stunningly adorned with use of water falls and a pool. Of Course there is breathtaking acrobatics with mesmerizing traditional and modern circus disciplines."

"...The new show, now in the Cirque tent on the parking lot of the United Center, "Luzia" is quite imaginative and very stylish in its presentation. It is designed to allow us to escape to an imaginary Mexico, a world suspended between reality and the dreams of those who reside there. By the way, there are no references to the President and his "wall" or the escape from Mexico to the United States. This is an entertainment production with one thought in the minds of the producers: To entertain and amaze the audience."

"...“Luzia” is on a cross-country tour and just in the nick of time to satisfy patrons who otherwise would miss their annual Ringling Brothers circus fix. “Luzia” a departure from the Cirque du Soleil’s normal more gaudy and bizarre displays but I hope they retain the pure circus emphasis in a least one production. It fills a void and fills it well."

"...Like other Cirque du Soleil shows the behind the scenes engineers seem to deserve—and get—as many WOWS as the incredible athletes. In this case it is the dance of designs in a fast-moving water curtain creating by hundreds of faucets with throttles turned on and off with computerized rheostat synchronized precision. The shows name, Luzia, is a marriage of lluvia (rain) and luz (light)."

"...Luzia is a surrealistic vision of the wonders of Mexico integrating music, dance, acrobatics, clown/mime, juggling, aerialists, and other feats of athletic/artistic prowess amid a revolving set of fantastic costumes, mesmerizing masks, robots and puppet-animals. This is a thrilling and intriguing 20-act show."
