Hilarious and deeply moving by turns, The plague rages through London. A couple, the Snelgraves, has waited four weeks for their quarantine to end so that they can leave the city for safety. On the eve of their release, two people, a sailor and the daughter of a neighboring couple, sneak into their house. Spotted by guards, the boards on the Snelgraves' house are doubled, and the four of them are left to wait out another four weeks together.
Snelgrave - Man, 50s - Wealthy, powerful, severe, and outlandish. He's a caged animal in a fine suit. His place in the cultural and social world is secure--he is at the top of the food chain. The situation he finds himself in, i.e. quarantined with people from lower social classes, reinforces his understanding of them as less human than himself. He is distant from his wife, Darcy, who was severely burned in an accident when they were newlyweds.
Darcy - Woman, 50s - Darcy was badly burned when a young bride, trying to save her beloved horse from a fire. Ever since, she has been untouched by her husband or anyone else. She does not have children. Something in her yearns for connection and love, release.
Bunce - Man, late 20s - 30s. A sailor, Bunce spends his time working for cruel masters at a backbreaking job on the sea. He has seen a lot of the world, and has had more experiences than the Snelgraves have in their insulated life. He's savvy, has a wry sense of humor, is strapping and wounded. His sexual power is palpable.
Kabe - Man. Kabe guards the Snelgraves' house during the quarantine. He fetches things for them, and is ostensibly of a lower class, but he has the ultimate power--whether they may leave the house or not. Kabe is unrefined and coarse; he lunges after what he wants.
The staged reading/launch party is expected to happen Monday, October 18th & Tuesday, October 19th. We will have 4-5 rehearsals prior to the performance. We expect to produce a full production of the play in Spring 2011.
