The New Speedway Rock Musical! is racing through Chicago this summer! Producers Richard Friedman and Wendy Kaplan of MadKap Productions are excited to announce this new musical in development for a 2015 staged reading. The award winning creative team of composer Berton Averre, writer Mark Saltzman and lyricist Rob Meurer are looking for nonAEA actor/singers who move well for this 1960's rock n' roll surfer speedway romp. Danny Herman will direct and choreograph the staged reading. Linda Madonia will music direct.
The rehearsals and staged readings will be held at the Skokie Theatre in Skokie, Illinois.
CAST BREAKDOWN:
Lucky Stubbs - Age, early to mid20's. A speedway stud. Irresistible to the women, charmingly slow on the update. Strong comedy skills; that ability to shrewdly and intelligently play dumb. Vocally, a BariTenor who can belt high, a rock singer who could easily play the lead in Rock of Ages or Tommy.
Pitstop - Early 20's to early 30's. Lucky's Sancho Panza, his handler, his Jiminy Cricket, living in a state of exasperation. The comedy skills of the straight man, setting up punch lines and pokerface reaction. Vocally, a baritone or tenor.
Pepper Johnson: Age: 18-midtwenties. Our leading lady. Gorgeous, innocent, impulsive, emotional. This is a classic sexy comedy role, the sort of thing done by Marilyn Monroe or Ann-Margret. She should be comfortable with rock style singing and full-out 60's style go-go-girl dancing. Vocally, a strong pop sound a la Wicked, rather than legit.
Margaret Ann Olsen -- Age: 18 to mid20's. The plain jane from New Jersey, who is love-stalking Pitstop. Her physical type should contrast to the dancer bodies of the Speedy Pies and Pepper. Strong comedy skills of the Amy Schumer / Joan Rivers self-degradation school. Movement is needed more than dancing. Vocally, a mezzo.
The Speedy Pies (Age: All are 18 to 25.) These are the groupies of the speedway world, attractive, alluring, seductive. Physically: Dancer types for full-out dancing. Vocally: Not legit-sounding voices. Pitch is important, and musicality. But tonally we are seeking the sound of edgy, bratty teen pop singers of the Sixties rather than legit-sounding voices.
Individually the Speedy Pies are:
DeeDee - A perky, zesty, wide-eyed cheerleader type, with a full-out almost over the top comedy style. Soprano or mezzo.
Laura - A comedic version of a deeply wounded, haunted, Goth-style girl. Soprano. Or, if MaryLou is a soprano, mezzo.
MaryLou - A comic take on a race track tramp, every move and murmur a seduction. Mezzo. Or, if Laura is a mezzo, soprano.
The Surfbums - Young Daytona surfers who work as mechanics during racing season in order to spend the rest of the year hitting the waves. All are 18 to mid-20's, good with rock singing in a Beach Boys and 60's rock style. All are excellent with comedy.
Kahuna - The slow-thinker. It's possible he could be taller and/or wider than the other two. Character comedy skills are needed here to play a slow-thinking surfer who might have experienced burnout from too much sun and salt water. Vocally, a bass, or if unavailable, a bass-baritone.
Cardoc - Mr. Fixit of the Surfbums trio; can handle taking apart an engine or analyzing a situation. His comedy is straight-faced and verbal. Physically, a surfer's build. Vocally, a tenor or baritone who must have a good Sixties falsetto. It's crucial that if Cardoc is a baritone, Horndog must be a tenor.
Horndog - Oversexed Surfbum, who can play hormone overload for comic effect. Surfer's build. Vocally, a baritone. (To repeat, if Cardoc is a baritone, Horndog must be a tenor.
Count Porcini Portobelo - Age: Mid20's to Mid30's. The villain of the piece. Oily, sleazy, preening on the make Eurotrash. Ideally, a tenor, though light baritone will do. His singing style isn't rock, but the slimy lounge style of the era.
Rehearsals will be from Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 31 (OFF Sunday, July 26) from 9 AM to 5 PM. The reading will be held on Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2 at 7 PM.
