Theatre in the Woods is holding auditions for Samuel Taylor's romantic comedy, Sabrina Fair. Remember the 1954 movie Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart? Or the 1995 remake with Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford? In this charming Cinderella story, the title character, Sabrina Fairchild, is the daughter of a chauffeur to the wealthy Larrabee family, who live in a mansion on the North Shore of Long Island. Returning from a stay in Paris after working as the private secretary for a prestigious organization, Sabrina presents herself as a young woman of beauty, charm, incredible sophistication, and a zest for living, so different from the domestic's daughter the family had largely ignored. She proclaims her desire "to do everything and see everything, sense everything; to know that life is an enormous experience and must be used. To be in the world, and of the world, and never stand aside and watch." Although she once had a crush on David Larrabee, the young playboy of the family, and returns to America with a wealthy French suitor in tow, she finds herself drawn to David's brother Linus, whose intelligence, lack of sentimentality, and knowledge of the world stimulate her. When it's revealed that Sabrina's father has amassed a fortune on the stock market over the past decades, she is able to woo and win Linus as her financial, as well as intellectual, equal. Parts are available for 7 men and 7 women of all ages. The show will be directed by Donna Lubow, co-founder and Artistic Director of Theatre in the Woods. Auditions will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, located at 10 Deerfield Road in Deerfield. No appointment necessary.
Roles:
Sabrina Fairchild: Looks 20-30; bright and vivacious, well-educated. She "has fallen in love with the world and is having a passionate affair with it." She has reinvented herself through her professional experience in Paris and has come home to find out if she is still in love with the younger Larrabee son, David. Needs to speak some French.
Maude Larrabee: Looks 50 and up; the elegant and regal mother of Linus, Jr. and David. She has wit and perception, though she can be snobby and put on airs. "A reigning beauty all her life who gives no sign of abdicating."
Julia Ward McKinlock: Looks 50 & up; Maude's best friend. A formerly famous magazine editor and bookstore owner in the Paris of the twenties, she is a woman ahead of her time. She plays the interested observer: wise, witty, and blunt with a face "that shows intelligence and good humor and awareness." Sings a French song.
Gretchen Larrabee: Looks 20-30; David's ex-wife, who is now dating Linus. She is "well-bred, knowing, tough." Could double as Young Woman 1 or 2, partygoer.
Margaret: Looks any age. The family maid, could be like Sabrina's older sister or mother figure, as she is warm and loving to Sabrina. Ability to cry realistically a plus. Depending on age, could double as Young Woman 1 or 2, partygoer.
Young Woman 1 & 2: Looks teens to 30; could double with Gretchen or Margaret, depending on age.
Linus Larrabee, Jr.: Looks 35-50; the elder Larrabee son, a cynical, good-humored tycoon who has taken control of the family fortune. "Rugged-looking and easy in his movements." He detects Sabrina's feeling for his brother and, for his own amusement, lays a trap to bring them together. He knows the price of everything but has no concept of the value of love. He is the real protagonist of the piece, as it is his decisions and personal growth that are key to the play's action and resolution.
David Larrabee: Looks 30-40; the younger of the two Larrabee sons, a debonair and wanton playboy who has been previously married. He becomes quickly smitten with Sabrina and wants to marry her. "Easy good humor, sure control."
Linus Larrabee, Sr.: Looks 50 & up; the father of Linus, Jr. and David. Courtly, gracious, but showing signs of age. He has become a man of leisure who amuses himself by attending funerals.
Fairchild: Looks 50 & up; the Larrabees' chauffeur. Quiet, humble, but with his own dignity. An avid reader, and surprisingly smart about money. Could be played British.
Paul D'Argenson: Looks 30 & up; a Parisian suitor of Sabrina's. "With his affability, the man has authority." Speaks with a French accent, but with undertones of Oxfordian English. Could double as Young Man 1 or 2, depending on age.
Young Man 1 & 2: Teens & up; Party-goers.
Show dates are July 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, and 29.
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script, or you may prepare a monologue.
