Unfortunately, while the artistic ensemble manages to do everything well, the play itself—about a woefully messed-up family gathering in a California beach house—only manages to frustrate."

"...The playwright shows off some of the formal experiments he would refine in later work, but tics such as characters announcing their awareness of themselves as characters are more self-conscious and jarring here. It’s difficult to track relationships among the characters, owing as much to Golden’s surface-skimming, keep-moving direction as to Wilson’s own shortcomings. And both Golden’s staging and Wendy Silva’s scenic design work against the challenges of the Chopin basement instead of with them, making every seat an obstructed view."

"...Surprising things can come in small packages. Take Theatre Seven of Chicago, a relatively young Off Loop company which is performing a Lanford Wilson obscurity called "The Sandcastle" in the cozy if sightline challenged Chopin Theatre basement. I'm not sure I would call this one-act a "forgotten masterpiece," but it is a rare peak at an important playwright at an early stage of his career in a little gem of a production."
