Long-time fans will note that this long-standing bad boy — who opened for Elton John in the 1970s and lived the party life — looks older and talks older, ruing his memory loss, his inability to master a remote control, his thinning Celtic hair. But there is something about the way he constantly rushes toward the front of the stage, blinking through his new glasses into the light, straining his body toward the front rows, and desperately trying to shuffle through all the tales he is telling at once. He knows that great comedy needs high stakes — the constant danger of everything smashing to smithereens. On Tuesday night, I swear, it all felt defiant: a brilliant comedic manifestation of that life-truth that if we stop competing and avoid danger and challenge, we merely wilt."

"...        Connolly meanders through one story after another, nearly all of them taken from his life. But he has a corkscrew approach to comedy, suddenly dropping one anecdote or story in the middle because something else has popped into his head that needs narrating. Early in the show he starts a tale about his visit to Chicago in 1976 where he hooked up with a couple of rock musicians who invited them to their Loop hotel to get stoned. A few minutes into that story Connolly abruptly shifts to how nose hairs grow at an accelerated pace in the nostrils of senior citizens. He returned to the 1976 story about 30 minutes, and countless further digressions, later.              "
