The Goodman Theatre has announced that Marc Bruni will direct the world premiere of Iceboy! Or The Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O'Neill Came to Write The Iceman Cometh, replacing previously announced director Kathleen Marshall due to scheduling reasons. The new musical comedy, featuring music by Mark Hollman, lyrics by Mark Hollmann and Jay Reiss, and book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Jay Reiss, will run June 9 through July 19, 2026, in the 856-seat Albert Theatre as part of the Goodman's Centennial 25/26 Season.

Set in New York City in 1938, the show follows Broadway's brightest star, Vera Vimm (played by Megan Mullally), who is at the top of her game until she adopts a 40,000-year-old Neanderthal discovered frozen in the Arctic. As Iceboy thaws, he unexpectedly becomes a theatrical sensation, inspiring the "father of the American drama" and challenging his legendary mother for center stage. It's All About Eve, if only Eve was a caveman.

Bruni brings impressive Broadway credentials to the production, having directed The Great Gatsby and the Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Award-winning Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. His recent Chicago work includes the world premiere production of Billie Jean at Chicago Shakespeare Theater last summer.

"After spending last summer on Navy Pier, I can't wait to return to Chicago this year and collaborate with the incomparable Megan Mullally in sharing this hilarious brand new musical with O'Neill-savvy Goodman audiences," said Marc Bruni, whose other Chicago directing credits include The Sound of Music at Lyric Opera, Trevor at Writers Theatre, and Old Jews Telling Jokes at the Royal George.

The musical reunites the Tony Award-winning creative team behind Urinetown (Hollmann, with Greg Kotis) and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Reiss, with Rachel Sheinkin and William Finn). Bruni's extensive credits also include productions at Paper Mill Playhouse, Geffen Hall, Stage 42, Kennedy Center, and numerous shows at St. Louis MUNY, as well as work with City Center Encores!, Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, Manhattan Theatre Club, and Roundabout Theatre Company.
