"...Yet the issues of class struggle and lack of empathy for the less fortunate underlying Dickens' world feel even more urgent in ours. Tom Creamer's adaptation has done its job well these many years, but I join the chorus of those who suggest that it may be time to unleash some fresh spirits into Scrooge's world and make the sort of adjustments in text and treatment this beloved and comforting tradition deserves for new generations. After all, the best chestnuts are the ones served piping hot."

"...Charles Dickens' manner of telling the simple man's story lives on in the Goodman Theatre's A Christmas Carol, a Chicago tradition 1978. This most recent production ( adapted by Tom Creamer and directed by Henry Wishcamper ) is a treasure to see, with sentiments to carry all year long and not just during the giving season. Larry Yando plays Scrooge—the miser turned benevolent spender—for the 11th season."

"...Like every production at Goodman Theatre, this one is superbly stage set, in this case by Todd Rosenthal with fanciful yet functional large-scale models of Victorian homes, street scenes, and the moneybags counting house of Scrooge and Marley. The transformative lighting design by Keith Parham took us convincingly from day to night. The true-to-type knowledgeable casting by Adam Belcuore gives us a cast that met the imagination's recall and yet was thoroughly diverse. The many unique characters on the busy stage, on various height levels, were thoroughly well displayed thanks to stage managers Alden Vasquez and Jonathan Nook. The whole extraordinary collection of personalities that were crafted and fancifully named by the genius imagination of Dickens, were brought into being by the fine actors and astutely directed with a big helping of humour by Henry Wishcamper."

"..."Bah-humbug," you can never get enough of this line made famous by Ebenezer Scrooge; however, there was no displeasure in this spectacular production. A Christmas Carol is a tradition, and it is much more than a holiday performance; it's a heartwarming and endearing story about how family love can conquer all; even in the mean Scrooges of the world."

"...With such a wide variety of holiday choices available in Chicagoland, the one bonafide production that truly says "Christmas" is back again at the Goodman Theatre. There are any number of other excellent alternatives playing around town, but the real deal, the play that will remind audiences of what the holiday is all about, is here for its 41st year. There's no better choice. Here is a holiday extravaganza with heart that is a must-see at this time of year. Do not miss it!"

"...The Goodman “Christmas Carol” has become an important part of the area’s entertainment patrimony. Quality control has never been an issue with any production I’ve attended at Goodman and I’ have seen dozens. This theater clearly takes its responsibilities seriously with presentations that always look and sound fresh. As a result, we are blessed with “A Christmas Carol” that never grows tired or obsolete."

Third Coast Review- Highly Recommended

"...By the time he wakes up from his nocturnal adventure, and even though we know exactly how this particular story ends, there’s simply no way not to get swept away in the triumphant nature of it all. There’s dancing and music, laughter and generosity, and one stirring chorus of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” that’ll have you hugging the ones you’re with and spreading Christmas cheer in every direction as you leave the theater with a smile. As holiday traditions in Chicago go, put this one at the top of your list."

"...Larry Yando’s Scrooge again gives a great transformation from miserly to merry, and Molly Brennan is a delightfully spry and amusing Ghost of Christmas Past. Todd Rosenthal's set is a technical triumph, and the costume design by Heidi Sue McMath stuns. Goodman Theatre's production of A Christmas Carol remains a perfect family outing for the season - but overall, there is more magic that could be made by such a tremendous company."

Chicago Theater and Arts- Highly Recommended

"...Portrayed with innovative staging, wonderful costumes and settings taking us back 175 years and an original musical quartet that marches into the past, present and future, the show will appeal to all ages. And it is performed by an excellent, diverse 26-member cast that embodies today’s contemporary spirit."
