"...Technical glitches marred the performance I attended, which I later learned was a preview. But the snafus don't account for miscasting, wavering pitches and overwrought acting that distances us from characters we ought to care about most."

"...Despite its Tony and Pulitzer Awards and long-running afterlife post-Broadway, Jonathan Larson's 1996 rock musical is not a perfect show. Nor is Lauren Rawitz's current revival. Actors must be at the top of their game to keep from getting bogged down in Larson's often flat book, and while this young ensemble has lots of energy and spirit, they're not all quite there."

"...I applaud Metropolis for taking a large leap forward with their production of "RENT". I am sure that as they continue to become the characters, this cast will make adjustments and become a stronger team and while it is not as powerful a production as the recent Jeff Recommended TheoUbique production, the music is terrific (Michael Bulaw on bass, Alex Newkirk on the keyboard and Lior Schragg on the drums. Great sound from these three people under Newkirk's direction. The costumes were a bit different from the original and touring, but worked so hats off to Cathy Tantillo. Jen Cupani's choreography was sparse but unique and Holly McCauley did a great job with her props. The finishing touches on the tech side were lighting (Michael Wagner) and sound (Chelsea Lynn)."

"...All that said, with very few exceptions, the singing heard on May 20 was simply not up to professional standards. The best vocal work came in all-ensemble songs, particularly the iconic "Seasons of Love" that opens the second act. In addition, Derrick Mitchell as Benny and Jordan Harris as Tom Collins truly shine. But in truth, most solo and duet singing, which accounts for roughly three-quarters of the overall show, was off key, shouted, poorly nuanced and all together cringe-worthy. Because a quality musical must first be sung well, it's impossible to recommend seeing this production."
