"Take Me Out," the Tony-Award winning script by Richard Greenberg, explores the aftermath of a Major League Baseball player, Darren Lemming, coming out as gay to his teammates and friends. The Empires, the fictional team in question, is made up of a racially diverse group of players who greatly respect each other, but keep to their own ethnic groups. A relief pitcher, Shane Mungitt, is brought up from the team's Triple-A affiliate in North Carolina. Mungitt proves to be very naive and unaware of the impact his personal prejudices and stereotyping have on his teammates. In a rivalry game, Mungitt throws one pitch to Lemming's best friend, a player on the rival team, changing the course of the game. Lemming is distraught by the outcome, and even as the team goes on to win the World Series, talks about retiring from baseball.
