Shout! The Mod Musical

Chicago Tribune - Not Recommended

"...The simple problem with "Shout: The Mod Musical," the new attraction at the Drury Lane Theatre Water Tower Place, is that the young non-Equity cast of performers just don't sing the numbers well enough. Of the cast of five, only Megan Long and Maggie Portman consistently hit all their notes. Long (yep, Red Girl) is a sassy knockout. And Portman (Yellow Girl) has both spunk and chops. But the rest of the time, it's painfully hit and miss in the pitch department."

"...Irresistible songs, great voices and a horribly cheesy show. (And by the way, despite the passable take on a Mary Quant dress, the design of those white Courreges boots is all wrong.)"

"...Everything about it is big and bright. David Gallo's smashing set -- with its bubble-gum shag carpeting and enormous, citrus-colored vinyl flowers -- explodes with color that complements Phillip Heckman's vivid period costumes."

"...Created by Phillip George and David Lowenstein, "Shout!" doesn't offer any deep insights on life or anything that will help women cope with their problems. But the show may provide a groovy fun night out with the girls who want to hear the great beat of the '60s and revisit the good old days for laughs at hairstyles, fashion and concerns that now seem so way-back-when."

Time Out Chicago - Somewhat Recommended

"...If you like the music of white female pop artists of the 1960s, Shout! The Mod Musical might be your cup of tea. If, on the other hand, you love the music of those women singers, Shout! is a steaming teacup full of ammonia."

"... The all-female non-Equity cast is talented, but their strident vocals and cartoonish antics under Jay Falzone's heavy-handed direction rob the songs of their lightweight charm."

NewCity Chicago - Somewhat Recommended

"...while there are some laughs and some fun in this show very much in the Rowan & Martin's 'Laugh-In' tradition (complete with go-go dancing used to punctuate one-liners) this show really misses the spirit of the sixties by miles."

Windy City Times - Not Recommended

"...What makes Shout! particularly annoying is the comparatively copious amounts of money that went into the show. The budget for the Day-Glo garish set ( think Barbie's LSD Dreamhouse ) could probably power your average off-Loop store front for an entire season. The waste is overpowering, from the abundance of wigs ( each about as convincing as Donald Trump's toupee ) to the so-tight-they're-practically-on-inside-out Mary Quant knockoffs to the drag-queen heavy make-up."

Gay Chicago Magazine - Somewhat Recommended

"...This is a shamelessly “please love me!” show. Fortunately for the girls, they are pretty loveable, although I did find my mind wandering off to visions of the parts being played as drag. Everyone has standout moments, but Lauren Fijol’s Blue Girl is the most consistently captured and Danielle Plisz’s Green Girl steals the show with the best over-the-top orgasm you’ll ever hear. The show’s highlight musical moment comes when the word vagina is brilliantly transitioned into the opening James Bond musical theme, leading into a show stopping rendition of Goldfinger. If this type of creativity could have been applied to the entire show this would have transcended its commercial product standings."

"...While the show got off to a slow start and the opening number almost made me feel that this might be a "to miss", by the time they got to the third song, I was really into it and by the time they hit the fifth song I was madly in love with all five of these ladies, watching their every move and one of the wonderful things about the Drury Lane at Water Tower is the intimacy- the audience can see the faces of these performers and they say a lot!"

Centerstage - Highly Recommended

"...The decade between 1960 and 1969 was filled with exciting people and events, from John F. Kennedy's election and assassination to classic films like "Goldfinger" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's," from the Beatles' musical invasion to Hippies, Twiggy and those mod Carnaby Street fashions. But it's primarily this era’s music that has the power to dredge up those 40-year-old memories long forgotten. For that reason alone, this musical revue is worth seeing."

"...Shout! The Mod Musical is marked as an indisputable crowd pleaser not only by these themes and catchy numbers but by its ability to engage the crowd and even launch them out of their seats."

"...The more Shout! keeps coming at you, the more you’ll enjoy and appreciate the energetic efforts of these fabulous five talents. The ‘60’s pop hits, under the articulate enunciation of these five talents, never sounded so good. This highly entertaining show is an infectious treat that will win you over."
