Lookingglass Theatre Company's Teen Touring Ensemble - a diverse group of 12 amazing and talented teens from across the Chicagoland area - will present "KNOWING:", a piece written about their experiences in the U. S. education system, Sunday February 12 at 7 pm, and Monday, February 13 at 6:30 pm at Lookingglass Theatre.
Lookingglass Theatre Company's Teen Touring Ensemble features students from area schools including Clemente High School, North Lawndale College Prep, Lakeview High School, Whitney Young Magnet High School, University of Chicago Lab School, Lincoln Park High School, Francis W. Parker and Downers Grove South High School.
"Chicago teens share their own stories of inspiration, triumph, frustration and sometimes, failure, as they struggle to learn and emerge as young adults. From the formal lessons of America's frequently embattled educational system to information garnered outside of the classroom, KNOWING: explores the processes by which knowledge is acquired," said Jody Davidson, Director of Education and Community Programs for Lookingglass Theatre Company.
More than 50 students auditioned to be a part of this program. The students worked for 15 weeks to dissect the issue of education. They researched, interviewed community members, gathered news articles and engaged in a great deal of debate to find the hot points on education, and then compiled their experiences and commentary into a script. The script touches on everything from learning disabilities, to affirmative action, sex education, peer pressure, and corporal punishment, but also issues of formal vs. informal
education.
Following their public performances at Lookingglass Theatre, the Teen Ensemble will tour KNOWING: to six Chicago area schools, Tuesday, February 21 and Wednesday February 22, then go on to perform at several community venues (to be announced.) Chase enabled Lookingglass to inaugurate the Teen Touring Ensemble in 2003 and serves as the Official Sponsor of the 2006 Teen Touring Ensemble. HSBC has provided support for scholarships to enable talented students from Chicago Public Schools to participate in the 2006 Teen Touring Ensemble."
