Emerald City Theatre

Pirates...fairy tales...flying carpet rides...an oversized peach...and a certain famous snowman.  Believing in each can make a child's imagination soar. Combine them, and you have the exciting ingredients for Emerald City Theatre Company's 2007/08 season.

Chicago's largest professional theater devoted entirely to families, Emerald City's 12th season boasts another creative line-up of five wildly innovative, interactive and affordable live theater experiences dedicated to inspiring children and bringing families closer together, including:

How I Became a Pirate
September 2007 - November 2007
Ahoy, land lubbers! ARRRR you lookin' for an adventure this fall?  Emerald City has the answer with this world premiere musical of the multi award-winning book, How I Became a Pirate, adapted for the stage by Captain Alyn Cardarelli and Grammy-nominated First Mate Steve Goers (the same crew responsible for Emerald City's smash hit productions The Jungle Book, Where the Wild Things Are and Other Bedtime Adventures, and many more).   Join Capt. Braid Beard and his crew of castaways as they invite Jeremy Jacob and your little pirate to partake in their voyage for buried treasure! Your family will soon know all about bein' a pirate! For ages 3 and up

Frosty
December 2007 - January 2008
This winter make friends with the warmest snowman we know.  Follow Frosty's adventures with four third graders who believe in the magic that rests within a certain special hat.  Watch them run here and there all around the square... you get the idea! We are sure you'll be warmed up immediately by this original musical, also written by Emerald City's hit team Alyn Cardarelli and Steve Goers. For ages 3 and up

A Fairy Tale Life
January 2007 - March 2008
If you enjoyed last season's Snow White and Seussical, you will love what director Ernie Nolan has planned for this original work!  Inspired by his trip to the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen in Denmark, Nolan will create a fantastical tale that weaves biographical elements of Andersen's life with his famous stories: The Nightingale, The Swineherder, and Thumbelina to name a few.  Children who see this spectacle-filled fairy tale-like biography will gain compassion for the author and a sense of the similarities between his life and his work. Your child might even begin to notice fairy tale possibilities in their own life.  For ages 5 and up

James and the Giant Peach
February 2008 - April 2008
Emerald City Theatre believes your child should have a healthy diet.  Which is why this year it is serving up a giant peach! Bring the entire family to enjoy this familiar and tasty tale about James Henry Trotter "the saddest and loneliest boy you could find" and how his life is turned upside-down when he spills a bag of magic crystals on his aunts' withered peach tree. Marvel as an exciting world of larger than life bugs come to life. For ages 3 and up

Disney's Aladdin
May 2008 - June 2008
Thinking about leaving Chicago for a quick vacation?  Travel with Emerald City to Agrabah, City of Enchantment! All of your favorite characters are here in this stage adaptation of the Disney hit, including Aladdin, Jasmine, and of course, the Genie. Filled with magic, mayhem, and flying carpet rides, audiences' spirits will soar with excitement.  This production will be filled with the kind of audience interaction parents and kids have to count on at Emerald City, allowing the audience to truly become a part of the story.  Most of all, the tuneful, Academy award-winning score with songs including "A Whole New World" and "Friend Like Me" will certainly make this musical a favorite for many years to come! For ages 5 and up.
