La Gringa

UrbanTheater Company
2620 W. Division Chicago

In this Obie Award-winning comedy about a young woman's search for her identity, María Elena Garcia visits her extended family in Puerto Rico during the Christmas holidays, excited to connect with her homeland. Although this is her first trip to Puerto Rico, she has grown up with an intense love for the island and even majored in Puerto Rican Studies in college. Upon her arrival, however, she realizes that Puerto Rico does not welcome her with open arms. The majority of the Puerto Ricans on the island consider her an American--a gringa-and María considers this a betrayal: If she's a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, María concludes, then this makes her a nobody everywhere. Her journey to come to terms with who she is leads María into misperceptions and misadventures. But will an unlikely ally help her find her way to the other side?

Chicago Reader - Highly Recommended

"...With joy in its heart, Miranda Gonzalez's UrbanTheater Company production reflects on what it means to feel a connection to a culture; though the blocking in the tight storefront space can be a little awkward, Gonzalez's ensemble radiates loving vibes at a time when they're few and far between."

Windy City Times - Highly Recommended

"...Under the direction of Miranda Gonzales, this Urban Theatre Company production ( performed in English, with occasional asides in Spanish ) remains always faithful to its cultural demographic, while appealing to audiences of all ethnicities. Sofia Tew makes a charmingly naive Maria and Anthony DeJesus a winsome Monchi, but it is the warmth and vitality conveyed by Frankie Davila's mischievous Manolo, Nydia Castillo's gruff Aunt Norma, Philip Camacho's patient Uncle Victor and NK Gutierrez's restless Iris that ensure our enjoyment right up to the reconcilatory conclusion."

Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended

"... I love the work that many of our smaller, “storefront theater companies” do! One of the more unfamiliar companies, at least to the general theater audience, is UrbanTheater Company, where they bring powerful stories, with a Latin twist to the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The Urban Theater Company is located on PaseoBoricua- 2620 West Division Street, in the heart of The Puerto Rican Community of Chicago. How fitting that they start off their 11th season with the Chicago premiere of “la gringa”, written by Carmen Rivera. This is the longest running Spanish play ever to run off-Broadway. While it is exciting to have this play be on a Chicago stage, it is even more so, that it be on a stage IN the Humboldt Park neighborhood!"

NewCity Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...This production is raw and honest. It will hit home for anyone who's desired to know which cultural identity they should choose: their birth or their ancestry. The answer is, as Rivera tells us, you don't have to."
