"...Though self-indulgent and overlong, the play contains some of Simon's best writing, including a masterful second-act encounter among Jake, imaginary Maggie, and really-in-the-room girlfriend Sheila (Alyssa Thordarson). It's fascinating to watch Simon play with reality, memory, and fantasy as Jake verbally jousts with the other characters and then speaks directly to the audience, seeking to establish an emotional connection he may be incapable of. Working in a darkly comic confessional vein that often recalls the novels of Philip Roth, Simon inventively juggles wry comic repartee with probing and painful self-analysis."

"...All around, Spartan Theatre has a wonderful production of Jake's Women, in which they uphold their mission statement by sticking to a tiny budget, and focusing on acting. This is especially impressive because Spartan's artistic directors are both currently engaged elsewhere. I should point out, in case it isn't obvious, that the play is highly cerebral."
