Confederates in the Attic

City Lit Theater
1020 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue Chicago

In modern-day Virginia, "hardcore" re-enactors crash-diet to achieve the hollow-eyed look of starved Confederate soldiers. In Kentucky, Ku Klux Klan members still call for race war. The Civil War, it seems, might not be over yet -- this is what Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Tony Horwitz discovered when he spent two years exploring the old Confederacy. An adaptation of his memoir by the same name, Confederates in the Attic features a cast of 14 actors playing more than 100 characters to bring to life an incredible picture of these lesser-known Southern nooks and crannies.
