Bette Davis Ain't For Sissies Reviews
Chicago Reader- Somewhat Recommended
"...The main appeal of Sissies (the title, by the way, isn't homophobic, just off point: it paraphrases Davis's comment that "old age ain't no place for sissies") is Sherr herself, whose Davis isn't quite like any you've seen, adding a bright comic energy to the usual semaphore gestures and wised-up locutions. Sherr is especially wild during a passage where Davis gets randy with Howard Hughes."
Windy City Times- Highly Recommended
"...Sherr's performance shuns all traces of camp caricature to encompass a flinty New England accent, changes of costume incorporating accessories belonging to the real-life Davis and facial replication mirroring her iconic persona so accurately as to totally eclipse the playbill photograph of Sherr as herself. A complete summary of Davis' long career could span several evenings-did I mention her four husbands, several high-profile lovers and well-publicized feuds with co-workers? However, this tantalizing glimpse into the early years of the celebrated artist who would have rather been an actress than a star, ends after just more than an hour-not in a defeated "What a dump!" but in a triumphant cry of "I'm bigger than the big screen! Fasten your seats belts!" -leaving us wanting more."
Stage and Cinema- Highly Recommended
"...Considering this is celluloid dominatrix Bette Davis, Sherr’s one-act tour-de-force can only be a blast from the past, a seminal glimpse of a legend in full flux. It’s always a pleasure to watch from a safe distance a silver-screen sensation who’s exactly who she was meant to be. Anticipating the half-century to come, Sherr’s maid of the marquees channels her future self with a signature one-liner—not “What a dump!” from the long-forgotten Another Part of the Forest but, of course, Margo Channing’s immortal “Fasten your seat belts! It’s going to be a bumpy night.”"
