Theatre Y
Macbeth

Pay: Stipend

Description:

Theatre Y is an international company made up of local actors dedicated to theatrical exploration with international artists. While the goal of the ensemble is to create collectively, we do so deliberately outside of a particular technique as we encounter the influence of a new culture, language, method, or talent with each production.

Currently, we are holding auditions for our Fall 2016 production of MACBETH as part of Chicago Shakespeare's Shakespeare 400 Festival, with a potential to also be invited into our permanent ensemble. The process of creating the play, directed by Georges Bigot (a central figure of the Theatre du Soleil in Paris during the 80's and 90's), will be lengthy, but extremely rewarding. Georges directs "at the foot of the letter", meaning he creates scenes of immense theatrical clarity as he filters Shakespeare's poetic text through a foreign ear and into work that is palpable and immediate. The rehearsal process, with and without him, consists of chorus formation dance/movement improvisation and endless new propositions for each scene, with rotating configurations of casting. The show is not yet cast and Georges chooses to postpone casting for as long as possible so that we are free to pour as many imaginations into each role as possible - engendering a truly collective and non-competitive spirit around the work. If the company determines that you seem like the right kind of person to join the production, you will be asked to join our next rehearsal intensive, February 19 - 21. Here, you will get an idea of what our process is like and will get the opportunity to collaborate with our current ensemble. We will continue to have periodic intensives until May. Over the course of this process, we will decide who to introduce to Georges when he comes back to Chicago in May, when he will continue rehearsals and then cast the show. Ultimately it will be his decision who to cast in MACBETH, though this does not exclude later participation in the ensemble and collaboration with other international artists.

We will continue to work together throughout the summer and then again with Georges' when he returns in September. The final production will run from October 19 - Dec. 4, for a seven week run at the Chopin Theater. We look forward to working with you!

Material To Prepare:

One monologue from Shakespeare, no longer than two minutes long, that will be worked once or twice to explore your theatrical flexibility, followed by an interview with members of the ensemble. The process should take no longer than thirty minutes.

Please send a cover letter explaining your interest and include your availability on February 12 and 13 - the anticipated audition dates - as well as a headshot and resume. Experience is not required, so if this sounds like something you would like to explore, but you don't have a headshot or theater resume, please introduce yourself in whatever way feels relevant, and tell us why you would like to be considered.
