Metropolis Performing Arts Centre is proud to announce auditions for RENT by Jonathan Larson. This production will be directed by Resident Director Lauren Rawitz, music directed by Alex Newkirk and choreographed by Jennifer Cupani.

Character Descriptions:
Roger Davis - A struggling musician, ex-lead singer, rock guitarist and former drug addict. He is reminiscent of Kurt Cobain. Roommates with Mark in the loft and battles with being HIV-positive. His girlfriend, April, killed herself after finding out she was HIV positive. Male, 20-25 yrs old Range: F2 - A4

Mark Cohen - Narrator of show. A struggling documentary filmmaker and video artist. Knee deep in his own soul-searching, Mark is the typical young artist. He and Roger are roommates in the loft. A bit of a nerd. Male, 20-30 yrs old Range: A2 - G4

Tom Collins - A computer genius and liberal professor. He is a nurturer with a smooth and relaxed disposition. Used to be a roommate in the loft and is HIV-positive. Collins dreams of opening a restaurant in Santa Fe, where the problems in NY will not affect him and his friends. He was formerly a roommate of Roger, Mark, Benny, and Maureen, then just Roger and Mark, until he moves out. Male, 25-35 yrs old Range: F#2 - A4

Benjamin Coffin III - The landlord of Mark, Roger, and Mimi's apartment building. A former roommate in the loft, Benny traded in his personal morals for power and wealth. He is married to Alison Grey of the Westport Greys, a very wealthy family. He is considered a sell-out by his ex-roommates. He, at one time, had a relationship with Mimi. Male, 25-35 yrs old Range: Bb2 - F#4

Joanne Jefferson - An Ivy League public interest lawyer and headstrong lesbian. She is smart and purposeful in all her decisions. Carries on a tumultuous relationship with Maureen. Joanne has very politically powerful parents. Female, 25-40 yrs old Range: G3 - E5

Angel Dumott Schunard - The eccentric HIV-positive street drummer, with a generous disposition. A drag queen with an incredible gift of dance and a magnetic personality. He becomes Tom's lover. Male, 20-30 yrs old Range: C3 - A4

Mimi Marquez - An HIV-positive stripper with drug addictions. Slender and sickly, she conceals it all at her job in the local strip club. She lives downstairs from Mark and Roger in the same building as the loft. She is Roger's love interest and Benny's ex-lover. Female, 18-21 yrs old Range: Eb3 - E5

Maureen Johnson - An unpredictably zany performance artist. Maureen oozes sexuality and used to live in the loft. She has recently dumped Mark for Joanne. Female, 20-25 yrs old Range: C4 - F5

Ensemble - Homeless Men & Women; Junkies, Parents (Mrs. Cohen, Mr. & Mrs. Jefferson); Support Group (Steve, Gordon)

Time Commitment:

Time Commitment: Rehearsal Period: March 28, 2016 - May 10, 2016; Mon-Fri 7-10pm, Sat 1-5pm, and Sun 6-10pm with one set day off per week. No multiple conflicts allowed with the rehearsal period. Tech Week: May 11, 2016 - May 18, 2016. Tech week rehearsals are mandatory and no conflicts will be allowed for Wed 5/11 6-11pm, Thur 5/12 6-11pm, Sun 5/15 12pm-12am, Mon 5/16 6-11pm, Tues 5/17 6-11pm, and Wed 5/18 6-11pm. Performances: May 19, 2016 - July 3, 2016. No pre-planned show conflicts are allowed. Previews/shows Thur 7:30pm, Fri 8:00pm, Sat 7:00pm, Sun 3:00pm, and Wed 1:00pm. Additional preview Sat 5/21 at 3:00pm.

Material To Prepare:

Please prepare a 32-bar cutting of a song from a rock musical or a rock song from the 80s-90s. Men interested in auditioning for the role of Tom can also prepare a 32 bar cutting of a gospel song. The directors may request to hear another selection, so be sure to bring your book. Male actors who can accompany themselves on guitar are welcome to do so. The two nights of general auditions will not include a dance call, but there will be a dance audition at callbacks. Auditions not to exceed 3 minutes total. Bring a current headshot, resume and sheet music. An accompanist with be provided. Casting Authority - Robin Hughes, Casting Director.
