The Jacksonian

Pay: Yes

Description:

Pulitzer prize winning playwright Beth Henley's eerie new play The Jacksonian transports audiences to Jackson, Mississippi, 1964. When his wife kicks him out, respectable dentist Bill Perch moves into the unsettling world of the seedy Jacksonian Motel. There, his downward spiral is punctuated by encounters with his teenage daughter, a gold-digging motel employee, a treacherous bartender and his now-estranged wife. Revolving around the night of a murder, The Jacksonian, brims with suspense and dark humor as the subversive becomes commonplace and the passage of time becomes hauntingly unpredictable.

In The Jacksonian, Beth Henley returns to the Southern Gothic storytelling that made her reputation with both critics and audiences. The darkly humorous play premiered at the Geffen Playhouse in February 2012 in a production directed by Tony Award winner Robert Falls with a cast featuring Ed Harris, Glenne Headly, Amy Madigan and Bill Pullman. It later premiered in New York with the New Group in November 2013 with the same creative team. Beth Henley's best known plays include Crimes of the Heart, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and The Miss Firecracker Contest.

Seeking:

Bill Perch (late 30s - 50) - A proud dentist and current resident at The Jacksonian Motel, he's lost control of his family and practice. Has a buried temper, but intent on avoiding pain, for himself and others.

Susan Perch (late 30s - 50) - An upper-middle-class lady, with an instinct for making things more beautiful than they are. Subject to violent and sudden mood swings. Proper, but can be provocative, even barbed. Still somewhat in love with Bill, she is filing for divorce.

Rosy Perch (16 year old) - Daughter of Bill and Susan. Teenager preferred, must be able to look and play 16. Off-balance, awkward and shy, but can also be manic, perceptive and hold her own with adults. Because of her acne, not used to attention from men.

Eva White (30s - mid 40s) - Waitress and maid at The Jacksonian Motel. A high school drop-out, beaten down but full of fire. Talkative, blunt, harsh, passionately racist. Desperate to get married, she's looking for a fairy-tale ending, and might be strong enough to force it into being.

Fred Weber (mid 30s - 50) a bartender at The Jacksonian Motel. Charming, manipulative, but also downright peculiar, a womanizer and a vicious thug with a checkered background, including time as a carny. Considers himself "a man with appeal," and certainly has an eccentric flair. Believes wholeheartedly in his own righteousness.
