After the sudden death of her father, June Muldoon writes a letter to God asking that he send Gray, IN a healer, and that no one else would die ever again. Her prayer is halfway answered when Dr. Galen P. Gray crash-lands outside of town in his hot air balloon. Seeing their need for a doctor, and the coincidence of his and the town's names, he agrees to stay, healing anything and everything they come complaining of to him. Soon a mysterious plague begins to spread through the town and Dr. Gray isn't sure he'll be able to save them. Rebekah Muldoon- 30's-40's, June's mother, smart, understanding, tired, steadfast, she can be counted on to do what needs to be done

Crutch Collins- late 20's-50's, farmer, clever, a solid man with strong convictions, married to Belva, who he cares for deeply

Belva Collins- 20's- 50's, farmer's wife, a kind woman, supportive, nurturing, excited a doctor has come to town, married to Crutch, who she cares for deeply

Pastor Phineas Wigfield- 30's-50's, a Baptist pastor, suspicious of the healer, lost his eye baptising a cat, good-natured and stubborn

Tiny Wingfield- late 20's-40's, very excited to have a healer in town, generally excited about everything, very sweet and trusting, Pastor Wingfield's little sister

Homer- 15-18, a farmhand, sweet and silly, desperately in love with June who won't give him the time of day, dependable and good-natured

Maggie- 20's-50's, owns the diner in town, sharp and somewhat suspicious of the healer, a take no nonsense kind of woman, generally kind
