"...David Hockney's 1992 production of Puccini's "Turandot," with its boldly colored and riotously stylized evocation of ancient Beijing, still has the look of a show that knows its worth. The dragon-jawed blue roofs, blood-red stairs and palace wall stretching to infinity offered well-heeled Lyric Opera patrons plenty to eyeball at Saturday's season opener -- even when there was less to rivet the ear. Richly costumed pageantry won out over dramatic urgency."
