The Three Musketeers

"...Of course, this story ultimately belongs to the good guys—as good as guns (or swords) for hire can be during the absolute monarchy of 17th-century France, anyway. Idle Muse’s dramaturgical materials (by Emma S. Rund) note the political undertones of the Dumas novel, written in the turbulent lead-up to France’s revolution of 1848, but the production doesn’t take itself too seriously. Between stolen jewels, midnight trysts, and poisoned drinks, The Three Musketeers makes for a rollicking, old-fashioned adventure with a strong comedic sensibility."

"...Idle Muse Theatre Company kicks off its 20th Anniversary season with this potent, swashbuckling, relentlessly physical and action-packed production of “The Three Musketeers.” Written by Robert Kauzlaric and adapted from Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 novel, this timeless tale is long, has a lengthy character list, and a lot of courtly intrigue and – almost forgot – sword fighting."

"...Artistic Director Evan Jackson’s exciting new production of THE THREE MUSKETEERS opens with a flourish of capes and the swashbuckling clash of swords. Idle Muse’s impressive twentieth season kicks off with playwright Robert Kauzlaric’s adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic historical tale of romance and intrigue. The production’s stellar and impressive fourteen-member cast is both strong, clever and extremely capable. And, masterfully supported by a talented technical team, everyone connected with THE THREE MUSKETEERS definitely embraces the story’s credo, “One for all and all for one!”"

"...I was truly impressed by the fight scenes; at times a dozen or so scrappers were creating, in that teensy-weensy space, a massive kerfuffle: one false move could cause real trauma. What fabulous choreography! Massive kudos to Violence Designers Libby Beyreis and Brendan Hutt, fight coach Elizabeth Macdougald, and the entire cast… There were but one or two who never took up a weapon. All four Musketeers valiantly swashed every buckle in sight."

"...D’Artagnan arrives in Paris primed to become a Musketeer. He has dreamed of this vocation and believes this his honor and abilities warrant service to the King. Before his admission is complete, D’Artagnan is robbed, falls in love, learns of a treasonous act and is challenged to dual each of the legendary Muskeeters; Athos, Porthos and Aramis. Although the Muskeeters are drunk, broke and disenchanted, they still are up for a fight."

"...Adapted from the novel of the same name, The Three Musketeers takes us on an epic, swashbuckling journey across France and England as this elite group of the king’s guard sets out to protect their brothers and country. Though on the longer side trying to capture every piece of the adventure, the cast delivers on the ambition of the playwright in a full, grand adventure."
