The Phantom Of The Opera Reviews
Chicago Tribune - Highly Recommended
"...Theater producer Cameron Mackintosh has been bringing long runs of grand theatrical spectacles to Chicago for nearly half a century now. Delivering a big night out for regular folks remains a point of pride for him, and his brand-new tour of “The Phantom of the Opera” remarkably manages to deliver the classic Hal Prince production in a refreshed and fiscally practical package that, necessarily in my view, gives more sensual self-actualization to Christine while maintaining the empathetic Phantom so crucial to the experience."

"...Andrew Lloyd Webber's mega-musical "The Phantom of the Opera" exemplifies how two things can be true at the same time. On one hand, the show - adapted from Gaston Leroux's 1909 novel - has aged absolutely horribly since its London debut in 1986. The leading lady here is mostly a glassy-eyed sleepwalker with all the agency of the wind-up monkey music box."

"...The Phantom of the Opera is seen as an overwhelmingly positive production, with a cult-like following. Still, some see it as a manipulative man, with controlling desires over a fragile woman, in his need to obsess over her. But in the climax, Andrew Lloyd Webber brings out the passionate humanity of the Phantom, who decides that a choice of love is more important than its demand. The play continues to provide audiences with an exhilarating, suspenseful must-see experience."

"...The new national tour of The Phantom of the Opera feels less like a revival and more like a return to the original production that took Broadway by storm in 1988. There have been many tours and changes thru the decades, but it may be that the closing of the original production on Broadway which ran for decades that gave the producers the idea that it was time for the country to experience what Broadway goers did so many years ago. Most notably, the success of this production is clearly anchored by Isaiah Bailey's commanding, emotionally rich performance as the Phantom. Between his performance and the amazingly strong supporting cast, it's a time to see Phantom if you never have, and time to return to the music of the night if you have."
