The Lady Demands Satisfaction at City Lit Theater

The Lady Demands Satisfaction

City Lit Theater
1020 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue Chicago

In The Lady Demands Satisfaction, a young maiden, Trothe, learns that her entire inheritance will be forfeit to anyone that bests her in a duel. Trothe must turn to the finest blade anywhere, (luckily, her Aunt Theodosia) if she is to save her house and lands. In addition to her aunt, she is helped and hindered by two of her favorite servants - whose well-intentioned meddling could create an international incident when a famous German swordmeister arrives on the scene. True to farcical tradition, identities and intentions are mistaken, comedy and sword fighting ensue, and all get the just end they deserve (even if it's not the one the audience expects).

Chicago Reader - Highly Recommended

"...Directed by Morgan Manasa with fight choreography by Samantha Kaufman, the show takes the conventions of classic comedy-cross-dressing and mistaken identity, witty repartee laced with puns and double entendres, slapstick violence, satirical commentary on gender and class divisions-and ramps them up with a nonbinary 21st-century perspective. The actors' performances are impressively athletic and exuberantly exaggerated, and the convoluted plot revels in its own improbability. Best of all, this production is genuinely family friendly, with multiple levels of humor designed to appeal to both kids and grownups."

Windy City Times - Highly Recommended

"...The comprehension of audiences unfamiliar with the source material is ensured by director Morgan Manasa, fight designer Samantha Kaufman and an athletic combat-trained ensemble's deft integration of a physical environment featuring frothy Georgian-era skirts and elaborate table settings with ingenious kinetic expression ( watch for a choreographic reference to Hamlet and Laertes' famous duel in the final showdown ) to convey a seemingly giddy, but in fact carefully orchestrated, confusion-all the better to deliver an ending satisfactory to everyone."

The Fourth Walsh - Highly Recommended

"...Although the entire cast deliver the madcap mirth, Megan Schemmel (Theodosia) steals the show. Schemmel is outstanding and hysterical playing Trothe's aunt and a famed swordswoman. Schemmel takes on an affected aristocratic diction and posture. She kills intruders and dismisses maids with the same aloofness. She brandish her sword and her comedy delivery with the same razor-sharp precision. Schemmel slays!"

Third Coast Review - Highly Recommended

"...Comedy, romance, mistaken identity and swordplay in skirts make The Lady Demands Satisfactiona delicious evening of theater. Babes With Blades Theatre Companyis staging the world premiere of the Arthur M. Jolly play, winner of the company's most recent Joining Sword and Pen Competition. Morgan Manasa directs the farcical proceedings with panache."

The Hawk Chicago - Somewhat Recommended

"...On the whole, how you will enjoy The Lady Demands Satisfaction ultimately depends on what you are looking for. If you are hoping for a classic farce, you could potentially be left wanting a bit more. However, if you are looking for the signature action and fight choreography of Babes With Blades, you will not be disappointed."
