The Clean House

Athenaeum Theatre
2936 N. Southport Chicago

The Clean House is a witty and wry romantic comedy about Matilde, a Brazilian-born live-in maid who'd rather be telling jokes than cleaning houses. Her employer, Lane, seems to have it all: a successful surgeon husband and her own busy career as a doctor. But does she? The New York Times has called playwright Sara Ruhl "a provocative new theatrical voice" and The Clean House "visionary." Directed at Athenaeum Theatre by Luda Solomon, this acclaimed play won the 2004 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005.

Chicago Reader - Recommended

"...Sarah Ruhl's 2004 romantic comedy, a Pulitzer Prize runner-up, is the promising inaugural production from Bluebird Arts theater company. The material's mix of whimsy and drama has moments of disconnect as well as charm, but the evolution of its strong female characters is a delight to watch."

Stage and Cinema - Somewhat Recommended

"...This philosophically un-American magic realism (we prefer our wishful thinking to be more pragmatic) may well be the play’s problem, as well as Bluebird’s failed challenge. The plot delivers too many forced oddities that give the action the quality of a dream. Disbelief gets suspended too much when Ruhl is clearly making up the rules as she goes. Perversely, this makes Matilde’s stand-up situations feel more like improvisation than persuasive make-believe. The jokes are on us."
