Short Shakespeare! Romeo and Juliet

Chicago Shakespeare Theater
800 East Grand Avenue Chicago

Verona burns under summer's heat-and the hatred of two families. The Prince decrees: if Montague or Capulet again disrupts the peace, lives will answer to the law. Violence stains Verona's streets. Against this horror, Shakespeare sets Romeo and Juliet, a tale of true love found-and tragically lost-within an endless cycle of hate. This 75-minute adaptation, told in Shakespeare's own words, speaks to today's youth about their own lives. After the performance, audiences are welcome to join the cast for a post-show discussion.

"...The fast pace and the excisions do mean that some characters don't get as much stage time, but in general, the cast makes the most of each moment. And that is part of what gives this story its enduring appeal. We of course know what will happen to the star-crossed lovers. But their raw energy and naive belief that the power of their love will cause the world to bend to their wills, rather than break them, still make us hope that maybe this time, it will work out for these crazy kids."

".. Superior acting is not the only hook here. The production also features some truly awesome fight scenes choreographed by Matt Hawkins (Chicago Shakespeare’s current production of Julius Caesar, performed on the same stage as Romeo and Juliet, also features his work). Composer Ethan Deppe provides just the right amount of music to underscore the action on stage. Other nifty touches included presenting some scenes in parallel which not only reduced the running time (which must be a constant pressure in realizing this production) but also allowed for a neat visual effect."

"...Romeo and Juliet is an ideal gateway to the world of William Shakespeare for many a young theatergoer, and those wishing to inoculate wee ones early in the wonders of the Bard might do significantly worse than with Chicago Shakespeare's 75-minute rendition of this much-loved tragedy."

"... I have seen many productions of “Romeo and Juliet” over my years of attending theater, even a previous Short Shakespeare! production, but this one was far and away one of the slickest productions I have ever witnessed. It has many moments that are delightful to watch and due to my grand-kids being unable to attend, I felt the need to speak with a youngster to get their feeling. Mellisa, who sat in the row in front of me, has never been to a live theatrical production and had no idea of what the actual play was going to be. She is 8 years of age and her eyes were glued to the stage at all times."
