Scarrie The Musical Reviews

"... However, the evening's finest performance belongs to Danni Smith as Carrie's psychotic fundamentalist mother, Margaret. WIth a powerful voice, sharp physicality and utter commitment to playing the scene not the joke (because the humor's so broad that the joke will take care of itself), Smith steals the show. Her twisted gospel number "Say It" is one of the most delightful musical numbers I've seen this year. It makes "Legally Blonde" look legally dead. The show itself has a few small problems, literally. The stage in Mary's Attic where it performs is very small and the play has a cast of 12. When they all get up there at once, space gets tight and some awkward shuffling ensues. Something also small is the show's budget, and while "Scarrie" wears its miniscule budget with pride, there are a few moments where it works against them. Though the moments where they make it work (which I will not spoil, but one of them might or might involve a bucket) earn some of the biggest laughs. And I'll take big laughs over big budget any day."
Chicago Stage Review- Highly Recommended
"...Just as there is nothing dated about the message and macabre madness of Stephen King's Carrie, there is nothing dated about David Cerda's original unauthorized parody. King's horror is timeless. Cerda's humor is flawless and this SCARRIE rises from the dead to create a Halloween treat, perfect for sharing with your favorite tricks! It's also a great way to help celebrate Hell in a Handbag's 10th fabulous year. Gather your friends and go to SCARRIE The Musical, before it's too late!"
