"...It's going too far to say that "Shear Madness" has improved with age, but it does have a certain retro charm that dilutes the stereotyping that seemed a lot more bothersome years ago. At Monday's opening, people sure got mightily involved in the show's interactive, detective components. That would be beyond me, but then I don't understand why people get so involved in "American Idol" voting, either."

"...Quite a few people in the audience howled at McGivern's every swish, sexual innuendo and overdramatic moment. I have no doubt that some of them would also still enjoy a minstrel show. To those of us living in the 21st century, the character is rightfully outdated and offensive."

"...As always, the play's hilarious heart and sassy soul is John McGivern's hairstylist Tony. Erupting with fey charm and double and triple takes, this Boys Town flamer could get laughs at a funeral. The machine-gun dialogue has been cleverly updated, and it's loaded with frothy fun."

"...Say what you will about low-brow shenanigans. For all the shrill, over-the-top, politically incorrect buffoonery the hyper-cultured sneer at, Shear Madness gets the last laugh. It’s not Chekhov—but it doesn’t pretend to be. It’s the theatrical equivalent of Cheez Whiz and, by god, this crazy ol’ world of brussel sprouts and edamame needs the occasional infusion of Cheez Whiz."

"...Though the scripting of the current production at the Chicago Theatre Downstairs shows a bit of age around the edges, the physical shtick and verbal banter clips along fast and furious with acid-tongue barbs about everyone from Martha Stewart, Beyonce and the Spice Girls to Judy Barr Topinka and Peter Francis Gerace."

"...In the Chicago Theatre’s newly carpeted-over basement, Shear Madness is ridiculous, ridiculously dated and trashy camp fun."

"...This fresh new production is peopled with terrific comic talents anchored by John McGovern, a veteran of thousands of performances of Shear Madness. His supporting cast adds much to make this show a real treat. It is perfect for groups, tourists and those who want light funny entertainment."

"...The Chicago's Downstairs Theatre is an adequate repository for the silliness, although the stage is pretty shallow and the sight lines are not the best. The cast is most appealing, although it is "Madness" veteran John McGivern who walks away with the show."
