The Best Man
2257 N Lincoln Avenue Chicago
William Russell, the ex-Secretary of State, is a wit and scholar with high liberal principles, beloved by intellectuals and suspected by practical politicians. Joseph Cantwell is a ruthless and hard-driving young man, who will let no scruples stand in the way of his ambitions. They are pitted against each other in a race for their party’s presidential nomination. Arthur Hockstader is an ex-President, who loves politics for their own sake, admires a tough opponent more than a chivalrous one, and is determined to have the final say in the selection. Gore Vidal’s 1960 stage play examines the nature of people who are drawn to power, and the lengths they might go to obtain the highest office in America.
