"...All of the songs are Saloff originals, ranging from pretty imitations of American Songbook classics ("Dancing Shoes" could've been written in 1933) to a lament, "Deep Inside the Rain," that really soars. Saloff does a fairly good job of portraying the guests at the service, most of whom are basically familiar stock characters—but the tales they tell are flat, unconvincing, and riddled with cliches. Over the course of 90 minutes we never hear a single moving or even memorable story about Saloff's beloved Butterfly."

"...The closest Butterfly comes to poignancy is a sweet account from an aging hairdresser of how the titular performer relaxed her husband’s uptight disposition in an impromptu visit to a gay bar. The other stories, though, are less on-point and feel cheap. This queen probably deserves a better send-off."
