The Copperhead

The Copperhead

City Lit Theater
1020 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue Chicago

Written in 1918, The Copperhead is a play from the early days of American realism in drama. It tells the story of an Illinois man who demonstrates Southern sympathies during the war, even in the face of his son's enlistment in the Union army and subsequent death at Vicksburg. The first half of the play is set in 1861-63 and the second half in 1903. This enables us to see how both the war and its aftermath have shaped his community, while it demonstrates the effects on him of forty years of ostracism.
