Iphigenia Crash Land Falls on the Neon Shell presented by Halcyon Theatre at The Greenhouse Theater Center

"...Technically, this is the most assured and sophisticated production I've seen from Halcyon. Rasean Davonte Thomas Johnson's video design (incorporating acid-tinged animation from Annie Hu), fills the walls of Steph Charaska's industrial nightclub setting without overwhelming the onstage action. (Some of the dialogue is difficult to hear, however.) Zebulon Barnow's sound design and score add the heart-racing beats of an after-hours party and suggest the impending horrors outside the doors. Not all of Svich's heightened language lands, but the crash is sobering."

"... Circa 1976, the impact might have been disturbing; now, we think of similar images in a Gaga video and shrug. Later, Iphigenia sees her personal story refracted through the mass media via actors who appear as news anchors on giant onstage screens. It’s a disturbing, dystopian vision—or it was until it appeared in Network, Minority Report and (satirically) in Up. This trope is no longer just tired, it’s a cultural punch line. Images like these pepper Iphigenia. Along with a rather comically motley crew of actors, they render this self-serious piece giggle-inducing, at best."

"...In the end, the production takes itself too seriously. There are a lot of moments that feel as melodramatic as the angst-ridden tunes that fuel the play. In a bout of meta-theatricality, Iphigenia brings up the burden of playing a character bound by a plot, a very intriguing idea. But like most of the ideas in this Iphigenia, it’s tossed on a heap with all the others. Almost as if we participated in a bender, the audience leaves bewildered and confused."
