Picasso At The Lapin Agile
Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended
"...“Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein walk into a bar.” It sounds like the beginning of a joke, doesn’t it? In fact, it is the premise for Steve Martin’s (yes, that Steve Martin) absurdist comedy “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” playing now through May 22 at the Citadel Theatre, 300 South Waukegan Road in Lake Forest, IL."

"...With actors who almost transcend the production with their standout performances, Citadel's finale to their excellent 20th season is well worth seeing. The production is enhanced by the scenic work of designer Jonathan Berg-Einhorn. His set is filled with color, creativity and copious detail. Cindy Moon's colorful costume design nicely provides a period look. All in all, this refreshing production of Steve Martin's absurdist comedy is an adult comedy treat, especially for those who are new to this play. It has all the magic, talent, energy and artistry required to make for a perfectly entertaining evening of theatre."

"...The Lapin Agile is a comedy play written by the incomparable Steve Martin. The comedy imagines a meeting between a 23-year-old Pablo Picasso and a 25-year-old Albert Einstein at a real life artists’ hangout in Paris at the dawn of the 20th century. It’s 1904 and the two geniuses are about to complete their most significant accomplishments; Einstein’s theory of relativity and Picasso’s painting “The Young Ladies of Avignon.” They have a lengthy debate about the value of genius and talent which is often interrupted by colorful patrons of the bar."

"...Mark Yacullo as Einstein beautifully portrays a man whose thought process is so complex and over the top, he's a joy to watch. Travis Ascione as Picasso is deep and soulful as the brilliant artist. Juliana Liscio switches off several different characters well with various accents. But it's Jake Busse as Schmendiman who steals the show whenever he's on stage."
