Oklahoma! Reviews
Chicago Tribune- Recommended
"...Alex Sanchez’s choreography does not overwhelm or strike out for new earth; rooted in social dance, it is closer to the movement of ordinary people than you usually find in “Oklahoma!” Sanchez sometimes demurs, narratively speaking, but he’ll still help you walk out the door, into a parking lot paved on a prairie, feeling like there’s something meaningful in the flat lands."

"...Musically, "Oklahoma!" still works. But the Marriott Lincolnshire's revival sits uneasily in a contemporary context. The musical doesn't come close to passing the Bechdel Test. You'll lose count of how many times women are referred to as items to be bought and owned. And in director Aaron Thielen's interpretation of the 1906-set classic, "Oklahoma!" is populated by characters under 30 or eligible for AARP; there's nobody in between."

"...Yet this production is no duty-bound exercise in honoring a dusty classic. Rather, director Aaron Thielen and choreographer Alex Sanchez's rousing revival provides a foot-stomping reminder that "Oklahoma!" remains perennially as fresh as a daisy. And their willingness to tinker (with some judicious cutting in Act I) helps keep it that way."

"...I sat through Aaron Thielen's solid, respectful production fully aware of the stories that weren't being told-but enthralled by the one that was: by its humor, its sense of hope, and the bone-deep sweetness of its classic score."

"...The director ( Aaron Thielen) made some modifications and his interpretations made some of the scenes feel as if they were new to the show. The choreography by Alex Sanchez was designed to fit the theater-in-the-round stage at Marriott Lincolnshire and thus did not feel as if it were a replication of the Gower Champion dance numbers."

"...Kevin Depinet's beautifully timbered and earth-toned scenic design, with its lavish, 360 degree projection-washed backdrops by Anthony Churchill, are matched by Brian Hemesath's authentic-looking wardrobe of gingham and dirndl costumes. But the real reason not to miss to this wonderful production is the opportunity to experience Aaron Thielen's multitalented cast performing this glorious play by Rodgers & Hammerstein and to hear a score that would become the basis for how book musicals would be created forever after."

"...Granted, the Oklahoma! book is a little light compared to future Rodgers and Hammerstein hits like Carousel, The King and I, and even The Sound of Music. But the music is sumptuously melodic, humorous, and in the case of Jud Fry's grim "Lonely Room," haunting. It's the acting and singing of Shea Coffman I most relish most among the abundance of fine performances at the Marriott."

"...All said, despite this review's initial deference to Mame, there is no call today to "Haul out the holly." The calendar says it's spring, and the analysis here says musical theatre patrons should urgently plan their treks to Lincolnshire because, indeed, everyone needs a little of this Oklahoma! right now."

"...With music direction and orchestration by Ryan t. Nelson and conducting of Marriott's orchestra by musical supervisor/keyboardist Patti Garwood, the show's musical pace made 'Oklahoma' feel very much alive now in 2018."

"...If you love Oklahoma, this is one you must see. If you’re tired of Oklahoma, this is one you should see. It is a production that reminds us of what a stunning, ground-breaking show this was back in 1943, and is a perfect spring (if it ever comes) and summer entertainment today."

"...Marriott Theatre's fine reputation for mounting challenging and exciting musical theatre in the round is on full display, enhanced by state-of-the-art projections, lighting, sound, imaginative scenic elements, exquisite costumes and a seasoned professional cast. With all this and a classic Rodgers & Hammerstein score - expertly served up eight times a week by the superb musical supervisor and conductor Patti Garwood - you just "Cain't Say No" to OKLAHOMA!"

"...Marriott Theatre’s OKLAHOMA! is the same show as it’s ever been, some theatre patrons remarking “it’s just like the movie.” For some, including this writer, the musical might feel dated and the plot doesn’t sit well in a modern context. OKLAHOMA! is a good pick for anyone who is absolutely in love with the classic musical and likes standard love stories. For theatre goers who don’t have an affinity for an older Rodgers and Hammerstein or are looking for something a bit less traditional, this show might not be for you."

"...Brandon Springman (Curly) gives a sweetly sung, open-hearted portrayal with a tenderness that balances Sophia’s granite. Susan Moniz (Aunt Eller) benefits from Thielen’s research, winning the day as a worn-but-not-weary woman who rules from center stage, rather than quipping from a rocking chair. Michelle Lauto (Ado Annie) is no airhead but a confident woman who doesn’t say “No” because she owns her agency. Aaron Umsted (Will Parker) balances this with a gentle core."
