Nunsense Reviews
Chicago Tribune - Somewhat Recommended
"...Goggin's nuns started out as a series of greeting cards with quips, and that one-dimensional, anything-for-a-laugh genesis doesn't do this show any favors. Some of the references are past their sell-by date—do we still need riffs on the "I've fallen and I can't get up" commercial?"

"...A relatively cost-conscious piece (requiring five comically and vocally gifted actresses plus a small band), "Nunsense" is now back on the stage of Lincolnshire's Marriott Theatre -- a perfect counterpoint, perhaps, to the massive, altogether glorious production of "Les Mis" that preceded it. The show has been expertly mounted by director-choreographer Rachel Rockwell and features an excessively gifted cast, but that cannot dispel the fact that it is trivial beyond all triviality."

"...The show repeats itself, some of Goggin's shtick feels tired and tightening the two hours to an intermissionless 90 minutes wouldn't hurt. Still "Nunsense" remains a pleasant little diversion, sort of like a sweet sorbet after a heavy meal."

"...This production, directed by Rachel Rockwell, gleams with Marriott's trademark polish. The performers are all top-notch--Alene Robertson is particularly strong as the mother superior. But not even Robertson's virtuoso impression of a nun accidentally drunk on Jack Daniel's candies can make this revue seem like more than what it is: a series of predictable comedy sketches and songs poking fun at all the usual targets."

"...These five ladies will have you laughing and clapping during this two hour tour-de-force with madcap comedy, some audience participation, audience quizzes, nun-puns and all in all a charming afternoon or evening of theater. No matter your ethnicity or age, you will have a ball. This play, written by Dan Groggin has been pleasing audiences for over 20 years and with this delightful cast of ladies, this production is as good as any other I have seen in the past."

"...While much of the material is familiar, many of the jokes make references to the Chicagoland area, or have been updated to accommodate this production's need to do its fundraiser on the set of "Les Miserables," the Marriott's previous show. Audiences will enjoy all the nun puns and jokes, the dancing and singing artistry, the unexpected costumes worn over the nuns' habits, the interactive audience quiz and giveaways and all the good-natured irreverence aimed toward Catholicism and other religions. With numbers like "Tackle That Temptation with a Time Step" and "We've Got to Clean Out the Freezer," this show is fun for the entire family."

"...The hilarious and long-running 80’s off-Broadway musical smash, “Nunsense,” has received a thorough updating of its campy humor and has audiences rolling in the aisles at Marriott’s prestigious theatre in Lincolnshire. Director Rachel Rockwell has gathered a perfect equity cast that includes veteran Marriott performers along with a show-stopping newcomer, Melody A. Betts, as the irascible Sister Mary Hubert, Mistress of Novices."
