Court Theatre continues its 53rd season with Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, Carousel, directed by Artisitc Director Charles Newell with musical direction by Doug Peck. The co-production with Long Wharf Theatre runs March 6 – April 13, 2008, at Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Ave.
This Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece reinvented musical theatre in its day with its lush score and seamless integration of song, story, and dance. Now the piece Time Magazine names the "best musical of the twentieth century" will soar to new heights in Court’s intimate space. Set in a small New England town, the story of impulsive, brash carnival barker and his bride spans heaven and earth in its exploration of love, human frailty, and redemption.
"Carousel represents an exciting next step in Court's musical theatre journey. The brilliance of Carousel is that it manages to be both a classic piece and a story that is deeply relevant now. Underneath fantastic songs like "June is Bustin' Out All Over" is an incredible story of two people trying to maintain a relationship in a very challenging environment. That’s a situation familiar to many people,” says Artistic Director Charles Newell. "Part of the joy of bringing Carousel to life has been the chance to partner with fantastic people. The Rodgers and Hammerstein’s estate, Court's Music Director Doug Peck, Choereographer Randy Newman and our production partner The Long Wharf Theatre, have all been an invaluable part of the artistic process."
Ticket prices for Carousel are $32 to $38 for preview performances and $28 to $54 for regular run performances. Tickets are available at the Box Office, 5535 S. Ellis Avenue, Chicago or online at www.CourtTheatre.org.
