Mother Of The Dark Water

Mother Of The Dark Water

2257 N Lincoln Avenue Chicago

Black Madonnas have been challenging the normative view of Christianity for more than eight hundred years by depicting Mary and Jesus with dark skin. In Mother of the Dark Water, five modern-day black women are inspired by original images of the Black Madonna to challenge the forces in the normative feminist movement that seek to silence their voices and mask their individuality. Drawn from personal stories, original poetry and dance, this play written and directed by Lauren Wells at the Greenhouse Theater Center in Chicago celebrates the power of speaking out, resistance and self-love.
