Moby-Dick

Harris Theater
205 E. Randolph Chicago

Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer's grand American epic arrives in Chicago on the heels of critically acclaimed performances in Utah, Pittsburgh, and San Jose. Based on Herman Melville's magnum opus, the opera brings the perilous adventures of the Pequod to the stage. Captain Ahab gathers a crew on his quest for revenge on the legendary whale that cost him a leg. Set in real time, the sprawling novel comes to life on the operatic stage. Featuring a sprawling chorus and massive orchestra, Moby-Dick is an epic feat of musical storytelling. This thrilling tale of adventure, passion, and vengeance is a not-to-be-missed event.

Stage and Cinema - Recommended

"...Mainly faithful to its sprawling source, this Moby-Dick conveys the doldrums that halt their passage, the huge burning vats that boil out the blubber and the whale oil, and the storm that Ahab characteristically defies, its St. Elmo’s Fire lighting up sails and masts. Strangely sympathetic to Ahab’s crazy crises despite their understandable apprehension, the male chorus at times suggest enablers in collusion. In any case they supply all the spectacle that a classic adventure demands."

Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...Tough, rare and bloody. These three words are used by the crew members of the ship The Pequod to describe the act of killing and subsequently butchering a shark or a whale and the quality of its flesh. It could also be used to define the mettle that was required to be a harpooneer on just such a whaling vessel, or the peerless few who could sustain the occupational hazards. But, most aptly, those three words encapsulate Chicago Opera Theater’s Chicago premiere of “Moby-Dick.”"

WTTW - Highly Recommended

"...In addition, director Kristine McIntyre has tapped an ideal cast who can act their roles with impressive style, as well as sing them with authority and exemplary diction. But Lidiya Yankovskaya, COT’s young and exceptionally talented music director (and currently the only woman to hold that position with a major American opera company), elicits all the feverish beauty of the score from her superb orchestra, and from the male chorus (directed by AJ Keller) that is more than three dozen strong."
