Mind Reader Reviews

"...Stage-magic repertoire being finite and a measure of overlap inevitable, our winsome host cannot be faulted for a few of us having seen some of his maneuvers performed elsewhere. In an age when no one is wholly certain of wayward coins and cards ceasing to misbehave after being returned to our custody, the reassurance offered by this weeknight neighborhood entertainment is enough to ensure its welcome."

"...This is not a one man show , as billed, but rather, a leader with a cast of 80 ( I think the studio theater holds that many and they were at near capacity tonight), performing every Wednesday night. As he puts it, “get ready for an unforgettable evening”. “The audience is the cast, their thoughts are his props and their minds will be blown!” This is factual! Due to the nature of this amazing performance art ( I think this is the best term to use), and his desire to keep the show mysterious for the next audiences, I will not give out any of the actual things that took place, but will tell you that he has a strange way of reaching out to audience members, and getting them into the show. Relax, and enjoy the ride!"

"...The puzzling, seemingly paranormal exhibits of mind reading are just part of the fun of the evening. The other joy of Mind Reader comes from Toland's engagement with the crowd. Trained as an actor and improvisor in addition to the art of mind reading, his pedigree shows. Mind Reader mixes audience in-jokes and pop culture references with a variety of other gags worthy of any stand-up comic. For Chicago audiences craving a thoroughly entertaining evening out with friends or a great date night full of nuggets to discuss afterwards over drinks or a late dinner, it's hard to imagine a more exciting option this summer than Mind Reader."

"...From the moment the 80-minute show commenced, Toland was in complete charge of the patrons, “transferring” information back and forth, sharply sweeping his gaze over and carefully observing the room. Throughout the performance, he kept up a good-natured teasing rap, clearly enjoying each interpersonal encounter, as people were chosen, invited to the stage, and then stunned with his peering into their carefully concealed information."
