Les Miserables Reviews
Chicago Tribune - Highly Recommended
"...A critic risks not being heard when praising a show like this for stellar vocals: “Les Misérables” have always been well sung, not least because, unlike most touring musicals, it is much sought after and does not require well-trained dancers. But it’s worth remembering that for all those years, the show often was mix-and-matching cast members; it’s success meant there were multiple Fantines at once."

"...A show of sweeping scope and melodic beauty, this now-classic musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's 19th century novel has for well over three decades been the very epitome of theater you go to in order to experience oversized emotions, to get a good aesthetically induced cry, or perhaps a few of those, depending on your vulnerability to beautifully belted high notes at the point of a character's death. There are a lot of deaths, and even more high notes."

"...Cameron Mackintosh's acclaimed production Les Miserables (The Miserable Ones), a Victor Hugo's 1862 novel, is now playing at (CPT) Cadillac Palace Theatre for 2 hours 50 minutes, including a 15-minute interval musical play entirely performed through singing-it's one of the best plays ever written. And last night, the North American Tour cast at CPT, without question, provided a sterling performance of this play. Written by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel with music by Claude-Michel Schonberg and a story loosely based on the life of the ex-convict Eugene François Vidocq and historical figures or events from Hugo's own life, Les Miserables continues to thrill audiences worldwide with its exquisite musical storyline. The most relevant themes, however, are related to the dignity of the human person."

"...If you can only see one play this season, make it this one. Even if you have seen other productions over the years, this one is worth it!"

"...Les Miserables is back, and I can't believe I am saying this but it's better than ever. Considered one of the greatest musicals it is based on a book by Victor Hugo, music by Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer."

"...There aren't many shows that radically improve as a property and theatrical experience over the decades, but "Les Miserables" has achieved that. It began as a 1980 French-language concept album that became an Intimate French-language pop cabaret show. In the wake of his success with "Cats," producer Cameron Mackintosh commissioned English-language lyrics and expanded the forces for London's West End. That 1985 version was transferred to Broadway in 1987 and also played a mammoth Chicago run at the Auditorium Theatre."
