Grace Reviews
Grace
Chicago Reader - Somewhat Recommended
"...Welcome to the stacked deck of Craig Wright's sporadically brilliant 2004 one-act, which reduces the complexities and consequences of commercialized faith to a tidy fable in which no amount of foreshadowing is too much. Which isn't to say the play's a bust. Far from it. Wright's characters are engaging and carefully observed throughout (and brought compellingly to life in director Georgette Verdin's beautifully acted production for Interrobang), and the script's numerous brutal monologues are stunning. But Wright's untroubled plotting turns most every messy predicament into a foregone conclusion."

"...Interrobang Theatre Project has had a very good year. The third and final show of their eighth season, Craig Wright's "Grace," which has not been presented on a Chicago stage since 2006, wraps up this splendid company's current season in which they were on a quest to explore the pressing question of "What is Truth?" which was addressed so beautifully and boldly in their previous two productions earlier in the season. With "Grace" and its tightly-knit plot structure and small ensemble of four actors, Interrobang ends their season with a bang - literally."

"...Craig Wright's 2004 drama has its dark, comic moments. But ultimately this is a drama that will jar audiences with the tragic path it takes. It's a journey laid out from the very beginning, then told in flashbacks. The play avoids the typical storybook ending, with Sam and Sara running off together and leaving Steve to his own devices. It's brutal and honest in that respect. But deeply religious theatergoers should be warned that this play may be profoundly disturbing. It's well-directed and strongly supported by a talented technical team, especially Erik Siegling's dramatic sound design, and makes a strong finale for the company's 2017-18 season."

"...This is a great play, and a fine cap to Interrobang's powerful season, whose theme has been "What is truth?" This play asks that question in huge bold letters and does not attempt to give any easy answers because there are none. At the end, it felt as if I had been kicked in the gut, and that was the point. This is a show that deserves to be seen: a brilliant, vivid, original piece in a provocative production."

"...More than anything, it is the performances that make GRACE a Recommended Best Play pick. All four roles present these actors with challenges of keeping their character real. They ace these tests with grace."
