"...“Going Bacharach: The Songs of an Icon” is a fabulous and deliciously glamorous little show that deserves to sell out the Apollo, sadly not the case at its first official performance on Thursday night. This Lincoln Park theater by the “L” tracks has mostly been dark in recent years; perhaps folks have gotten out of the habit of going there. But if you’re a fan of the Bacharach oeuvre, and anyone who loves popular music or jazz must be in that category, given his gorgeous tunes and his compositional variety, this intimate experience is absolutely not to be missed."

"...Many of you will not recognize the name of the composer that this show, “Going Bacharach” is about, but will know a majority of the works he created. This tribute to the man and his music was created by Will Friedwald, Adrian Galante, Tedd Firth & Jack Lewin ( who conceived the idea). Firth did the music supervision and Galante the orchestrations and arrangements and is also the pianist for the show as well as conductor, and he plays a mean clarinet!"

"...The show’s excellent Chicago?based band proves the former with dazzling precision, while the production ladles on the latter with a showbiz artificiality–part Vegas, part Sweeney Sisters—that coats the evening in more cheese than the material can bear. It’s a matter of taste, but the tension between the revue’s musical sophistication and its Velveeta?sheen never resolves into a coherent style."

"...Like a lot of millennials, I learned who Burt Bacharach is from Austin Powers. Unlike a lot of millennials, I was the kind of dork who ended up getting into his music. (I also became a lifelong devotee of Elvis Costello thanks to his duet with Bacharach in the sequel, but that’s a story for another time.) So I was excited to hear the revue Going Bacharach: The Songs of an Icon has arrived in Chicago, on tour after an off-Broadway run earlier this year."

"...Going Bacharach: The Songs of an Icon is the kind of must-see revue that reminds you how forever durable a great pop song can be when it is placed in the hands of performers who understand both the music’s structure and its emotional impact. It’s almost obligatory to note that even if you think you do not know of Burt Bacharach, you most assedly do! Nearly every song will be familiar leading some audience recognition and a nod of “oh, I didn’t know he wrote that one!” But the real pleasure comes from hearing how these performers give the catalogue a renewed life."

"...What ultimately makes Going Bacharach at the Apollo so appealing is its sincerity. There’s no irony here, no attempt to reinvent the wheel—just a deep respect for a music that resonates across the generations. It’s the kind of show that invites you to sit back, hum along, and remember exactly where you were the first time you heard these songs"
