Eurydice Reviews

"...The Artistic Home's production of Eurydice is, to use a word dropped throughout the show, interesting. On one of the first cold Saturday nights of the year, I left the production (directed by Kathy Scambiattera) ambivalent. Sarah Ruhl's upheaval of the ancient myth is gorgeous and juicy, layered with a disdain for macho mythology and a fatalist treatment of womanhood. In that respect, I appreciated the story's timeliness. We're in the middle of an extinction event where our cultural stories of power are revealing themselves to be fragile; gender is a trap that's truly (thankfully) under fire."

"...Sad, touching, yet funny, Sarah Ruhl's adaptation of the Ancient Greek myth "Eurydice" has been reimagined in this tragicomedy, produced by The Artistic Home and directed by Kathy Scambiatterra. This is the best show I've seen since live theatre has reopened to Chicago audiences at 100% capacity!"

"...Directed by Kathy Scambiatterra, the Artistic Home's production of Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice marks the end of the actor-centered company's pandemic hiatus. Ruhl's script breaks from most tellings of the classic Greek myth of Orpheus by adopting the perspective of Eurydice as it explores themes of grief, memory, and eternity. While the Artistic Home's production captures the visual wonder and lyricism of Ruhl's script, some elements of the production rob Euryidce's choices of their stakes, making the show feel more like a string of impressionistic vignettes than a climactic narrative driven by an empowered heroine."

"...The Artistic Home chose a sure-fire winner for its return to in-person productions, with a creative staging and knock-out cast in Eurydice by celebrated playwright Sarah Ruhl. The "press night" show October 28 at the Den Theatre found a well-oiled machine delivering flawless performances. The joy of sitting in a sold-out room was soon surpassed by the show itself."

"...The Artistic Home takes full advantage of Ruhl’s script in recreating this charming and tragic story. Kathy Scambiatterra directs the cast of four, and a chorus of three, and builds on Ruhl’s stage directions in endearing and often comic style."

"...This is an Orpheus and Eurydice story that does not hinge on that final emotionally-fraught journey. It is about the love and connections we make in life and the fact that they cannot last forever. It is about looking back at them with fondness and then moving on into an uncertain future instead of allowing them to color our whole futures. And it is about what is real (like love and commitment) as opposed to what is not (like the pornographic desires of Wojcik’s characters). Ultimately, despite its supernatural setting and talking rocks, this may be the most realistic and ultimately unsentimental retelling of this story I have ever seen."

"...Eurydice is a good match for avid theater goers who seek the rare production that entertains as equally as it probes into deeper meanings."
